Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is used where corrosion resistance is required. This is generally required for food preparation applications and harsh environments such as coastal regions.

Compared with Mild steel, Stainless steel can sometimes be a more economical material when the cost and time of coatings and treatments are factored in.

Machining

We regularly machine 304 and 316 grades of stainless steel.  We also machine duplex and hardenable grades of stainless steel such as 2204 and 431. Stainless steel can be challenging to machine, requiring special tools and methods.

Fabrication

For stainless steel fabrications, we mainly use 304 or 316 grades.  Care needs to be taken when processing stainless steel in the workshop. Contamination with carbon steel can cause unsightly surface rust on stainless.

Processes include:
Laser and plasma cutting
Pressing and folding
Rolling and bending
Tig Welding
Mig Welding
Pickling
